Why I Became a Coach
I have a special place in my heart for late bloomers, having begun my own journey of reinvention at age 35. Back then, I was full of shame because I didn’t know who I was or what made my heart and soul sing. I was a people-pleasing perfectionist trying to figure out who everyone else wanted me to be and acting as if I were that person. It was a painful time for me, so I committed to making my personal growth a priority. I had to find my purpose and a way to express that in the world.
Today, over 40 years later, I know that journey well, and my career as an educator and training and development professional has helped more than 1,000 people to live authentic, fulfilling lives. Over the years, I have also applied what I teach others to myself. I earned my doctorate at 56, was hired for my last corporate job at 64 and retired from corporate work at age 75 in order to focus on my coaching practice: It’s Never Too late to Bloom!
One day, when I was taking a walk, I noticed an acorn lying isolated and abandoned on the concrete road. I thought to myself, “Every acorn has the potential to become a mighty oak tree. That acorn will never reach its potential because it isn’t in a supportive environment in which to grow.” This can happen to people as well.
How I can help you
Inside all of us lives a child, bursting with the desire to express, to create and share, to give and receive, to love and be loved. Yet many of us are held back from being all that we are meant to be.
In our coaching relationship, I listen, I ask thoughtful questions and help you discover your true self, the self you want to be. You will learn to empower yourself and make choices for your own good and the good of all.
You can wait or you can act. Remaining in a stagnant comfort zone means a future of more of the same. The only failure is the failure to act. The path you’re on is only one of many possible choices. With support, you can take one small step in a new direction, then another and you will find yourself. You don’t need a crisis to begin.
As a Certified Professional Coach, my passion is to partner with you on your journey as you manifest what matters most to you. If you desire to come home to yourself. If you are yearning for a greater sense of personal fulfillment and are telling yourself you want more out of your life, now is the time.
Let’s make it happen!
I met Barbara at a time in my life when I desperately needed understanding, direction, guidance and support. She became my mentor, gently opening my mind and heart to living my life with a level of awareness and purpose that I was not able to see by my own power. Barbara shared with me the wisdom and knowledge that she has gained through her own life experiences and growing pains, to help me see that I had the ability to look at a challenging situation in a different light which in turn pointed me toward a solution. I can honestly say that without her help, I would not be where I am today, and I would not be the strong, confident person I am today. I have learned from her example that by owning my decisions and behavior, while being inquisitive and willing to learn—about myself, about life, and about the people around me—I can continue to evolve into the person I was born to be. Barbara has been an immeasurable gift in my life!

Barbara, you were one of the best gifts I ever gave myself!
I have heard before that when the student is ready, the teacher appears.
I have truly found this to be the case. From your coaching I became clear on reaching goals I had given up on. I have learned that I do not have to give up my needs or who I am because of my prior concern of pleasing others. I am in my flow and gravitating to pleasure. As I continue to have what I call magical moments I am in gratitude for clarity, growth and action…Thank you.

You’ve been a great coach for me for decades. Real. Practical. Authentic. Wise. Relevant. Results.

You have an amazing ability to pull the curtain back to see the truth behind what and why I make excuses for my behavior. Your gift with words and verse gives me a crystal clear understanding of things, and the wisdom behind your words has guided me through difficult and dramatic changes to improve my life! Your never-ending desire to learn—to grow and stretch yourself, and to help me grow, to my potential. You are an amazing force, Barbara. I am so blessed and grateful to have you in my life, and I love you.

You are the best listener I know, very intuitive about feelings and emotions, and always bravely striving to better yourself.
Barbara S. – Florida
You are an active listener. I feel heard when sharing with you even when I “babble”. This is not something I take for granted with most people. You are non-judgmental. I feel like you are accepting of my humanness. You are trustworthy. I feel that my secrets are safe with you. You have encouraged and promoted my growth to become the best “me” I can be.

It is difficult to put into words the transformation I have undergone as a result of working with Barbara. As I write this, I do so with a confidence and belief in myself that was never realized until I was able to trust in Dr. Barbara’s wisdom, patience and encouragement to open up to an aliveness, which had been lying dormant for the better part of my life. I wish the whole world could experience the positive changes that I have. I now have the privilege of living each day of the rest of my life with self-love and respect. Nobody should ever settle for less! Thank you!
